Brooklyn Park, Minnesota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has firstly highlighted the importance of being informed about your practice as a teacher. In other words, evaluating what you do in class to determine if your practice (and you as a person) line up with the characteristics of a good teacher, e.g. are you patient, kind, entertaining and lively? In addition to this, it highlights the importance of knowing about various cultural groups and general trends which are present in them. In doing so, it will be possible to teach more effectively, e.g. giving group activities in cultures which approve of discussion and collaboration such as Latin American cultures, or finding quieter ways to work in Asian cultures. Furthermore, there are a great variety of factors which affect learners' beliefs about learning English greatly, and these differ between adults and young learners, e.g. life experience, learning experience, language awareness, language levels, etc. These factors must all be taken into account as far as possible in order to make teaching suitable and successful for the learners at hand. A good knowledge of roles that the teacher may take on makes this task less daunting. If these roles are familiar to a teacher and the roles which are most appropriate for the teaching situation can be isolated, it will be easier to plan lessons and activities. An example of this would be knowing that group work is desired in Latin America, and therefore acting as a facilitator, monitor, organizer and participant more often than as a manager. The tasks can then be planned according to the style of teaching which will be followed. In conclusion, if you are aware of yourself as a teacher, and your learners' backgrounds and factors affecting them, teaching will be more effective and successful.
