This unit focused on teaching stress, intonation and pronunciation. Teaching these is very important as having people understand exactly what you mean usually depends on how clearly one says the words and how he/she says it by where the stress is placed. In teaching stress, intonation and pronunciation, the teacher must be aware of the general guidelines of the following. Intonation is the change in volume and pitch in a sentence to indicate feelings, agreeing, disagreeing or confirming what was said. The normal pattern of the English language is the rise/fall pattern, to indicate positive/negative statements, questions, greetings and instructions, and the fall/rise pattern that indicates surprise or disagreement. Lastly, there us the flat intonation that indicates that the speaker has nothing much to say. Techniques such as Nonsense words, By gesture, humming or singing and using the board can be used to teach intonation. Stress is used to show the meaning that one needs to convey. The context of the speaker can be realized because of the word that was stressed in the sentence. In using correct stress of the word, there are only 2 simple rules, namely: each word only has one stress, and only syllables are stressed. Techniques for teaching stress are contrastive stress, using gestures, choral work, using the board and using stress marks. Lastly, it is important to teach pronunciation to the students so that they can be understood. The use of phonemic symbols is really helpful in teaching pronunciation. The teacher must also know how the words are formed and pronounced. Place of articulation and manner of articulation are also important for the teacher to know. Techniques in teaching pronunciation are peer dictation, modeling, using visual aids. phonemes and tongue twisters.
