This unit is very helpful and informative. Teaching is an art and science and could follow several pathways. Different methodologies were briefly introduced like Grammar-Translation, Audio lingualisim, PPP, Task based, CLT, CLL, The Silent Way, the Lexical approach, and ESA methodology. Much emphasis was on ESA method.
The ESA Method utilizes what is best between all methods. The concept of eliciting is very fundamental in this method. The three stages of ESA are:
Engage: in this stage the teacher warm up the class and gets every student to talk a bit. There is no teaching in this stage.
Study: in this stage learning point is introduced in an elicitation way. Along with activities make sure the students understood the point.
Activate: in this stage students put into practice what they learned
There are different styles for the ESA method and a teacher should use each appropriately.
There is the straight forward ESA method, the Boomerang ESA, and the Patch ESA
