There are lots of methodologies that combine into forming a modern ESL teaching techniques. The 3 main stages of any ESL lesson are Engage, Study and Activate. This can be varied as required depending on content and the students in the class but should always begin with Engage and end with an Activate. There are lots of activities that can be used in these sections and varying the activities will help keep students engaged. Feedback is important and students should be praised and encouraged as well as corrected. The bulk of correction should take place in the study section of the lesson with Engage and particularly Activate focusing on fluency. Mistakes may still be discussed after the Activate section has been completed if appropriate though.
