Wawatam, Michigan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit highlighted general characteristics of good teachers and learners. The unit taught me that teachers play many roles in the classroom, and that each class activity must match with an appropriate role. Sometimes the focus will be strictly on the teacher, whereas other times, the teacher will play more of a supportive background role in which observing will also be important.
Unit 1 also explained to me the differences between adult and young learners. Though more motivated, adults will often have fixed views of how a classroom should function and will be less receptive to new teaching methods. Young learners, on the other hand, will be more accepting of different learning processes. However, young learners have less life and educational experience, as well as shorter attention spans, leading to more behavior problems and difficulty in building a good rapport with students.
Lastly, the unit covered the categorizations of language levels of students. This starts with beginner, which has zero to basic knowledge of English that is hard to access, to elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, post-intermediate, and finally advanced, which is a student that requires personal responsibility of further learning, and study of more subtle topics. The final topic in the unit was reasons for motivation to take English classes.
