Unit 18 was really full of a lot of complicated English grammar. The uses of modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs, relative clauses, and the passive voice all felt like a little much for one chapter. There was quite a bit of grammar that I am sure I have studied at some point in my life but felt quite daunting nonetheless. The use of commas, in regards to relative clauses, is one of the places I have the least confidence in and while I do not think I learned enough in this chapter to improve that, I at least know where to begin with independent research later on. The passive voice of course comes naturally – but trying to spot the verb tense of the passive form was fairly difficult. Modal verbs are taught at all levels of English in my experience, but I have never thought of them as a solitary unit of English speech. Phrasal verbs feel like a type of English that has grown organically with common use that means it may be quire challenging to teach.
