The contents of this unit were quite interesting. I've long believed that pacing, phrasing, pausing, and intonation are critical for English reading and speaking fluency. When people are able to read and speak fluently, they are more likely to understand/comprehend what is being said. The material in this unit took the "abstract" concepts and made them more concrete. This was my first exposure to the phonemic symbols chart, so I will definitely be studying it more in-depth. I also see value in teaching one exemplar word for each phonetic sound, and keeping a word wall in the room or in student notebooks. It's easy to refer back to that exemplar word when troubles in reading, speaking, or writing English comes up later.
