Unit 16 dived into conditionals and how to rework people’s words into reported speech. I benefited because I would never have thought that using “if” could be categorized so many different ways. The concepts of the conditionals is some advanced teaching. The zero conditional will allow English students to express facts of cause and effect. The first conditional will allow students to express their predictions of realistic outcomes, also in a cause/effect manner. The second conditional will allow students to express their dreams and hopes, and perhaps a bit of the outrageous in a cause/effect style. The third conditional allows a student to express hypothetical cause/effect ideas in a past context. The mixed conditional allows a student to express and imagined outcome for an imagined action in the past. I benefited from this unit by gaining a better understanding of how my own expressions are formed. This will allow me to teach students to express themselves more expansively and from the heart. The section about turning speech heard into a reported format was further useful. There are so many subtleties in the English language, such as reported and direct speech, that this unit helps me to get a handle on it and teach students how to relay information they heard.
