Unit 15 focused on the assessment and evaluation components of ELL instruction. While this unit was quite short, I learned some valuable facts related to this areas of teaching. While I have used the various types of assessments (placement, diagnostic and progress) in my classes, I had not spent considerable time thinking about how each assessment leads into my lesson planning. I need to spend more time on evaluating progress for each student's individual needs, as opposed to looking at the scores as a whole. Additionally, I found the section on the external exams helpful. The TOEFL was the only exam mentioned that I was somewhat familiar. Depending on my students' motivation for learning English, I need to be sure I am aware of the variety of exams available.
