In Unit 3 we learn about several teaching practices, including Communicative Language Training, Grammar – Translation, Audio – Lingualism, PPP, etc. The unit gives a detailed explanation of the ESA Method (Engage, Study and Activate). We also learn that teachers use different methods for their respective classes, depending on factors like their own personality, students’ culture, and needs.
A good teacher knows how essential the exposure of language is, she also understands that her opinion is as important as free-flowing activities she initiates in her class. She is aware of the challenges her students face and therefore feature techniques that make the learning process stress-free. In Unit 3 we focus on one method in detail called ESA. It stands for Engage, Study and Activate and is also an effective one. Factors like student motivation, exposure to language and the opportunity to use it are all covered in ESA. A comprehensive list of suggested activities is available in this Unit. They are engaging, prompting, stimulating and encouraging such as Introduction Prompts where the students have to follow the prompt written on the board and introduce themselves. It is a good warmer exercise for the first class and simple enough for students to follow. Whereas, an activity like Alphabet Relay would urge students to dig deep into their vocabulary knowledge.
It also runs us through lesson planning guidelines as well further clarifying the role of the teacher in her class. From Encouraging students to correcting them when necessary, from eliciting to avoiding giving the students too much and working towards a high student talk time for the students are just some guidelines to follow.
Overall this Unit is a great resource for all the teachers, existing and new ones.
