Every word in a sentence has a purpose which is identified as one of the parts of speech. The basic sentence structure consists of a subject and a verb. Nouns name people, animals, places, things, qualities or states. Adjectives describe the nouns. Articles tell us whether the noun is general or specific. Verbs tell us what the subject is doing or describes the state of being of the subject. Adverbs add meaning or information to the verb. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb when used as a noun. Pronouns are words used in place of a noun. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. Conjunctions join together clauses or phrases into a single sentence. English teachers must have a better understanding of the English language than the typical English speaker because teachers will need to be able to explain clearly why certain words are considered correct while other words are not.
