We use the past tense to communicate what happened. I look at the past tense as a way to discuss time. Using the past tense can be tricky, but there are some easier ways of learning it. Typically the past simple tense adds -ed or -d to the end of the verb. This signifies an action completed at a definite time in the past. The past continuous oftentimes adds -ing to the end of the verb with was or were. The past continuous can express an action that happened before and continuously after, but does not necessarily have to be used with a time expression. The past perfect uses the past participle in addition to "had" to share the past actions from a different viewpoint.I learned that one easy way to remember how to use this is by telling a story backwards. The past perfect continuous is generally used to talk about longer actions in the past that had been going on continuously until the moment. It generally uses the " had been" plus a verb ending in -ing.
