In terms of a brief overview of Unit 1, I believe the discussion of teacher roles and student motivation to be the most vital elements. I have learned that my role as teacher goes beyond instructing lessons in a classroom. An effective teacher models, facilitates, manages, evaluates and participates during the class sessions. The key is finding the delicate balance of when and how to change roles to best meet the needs of the students. Along another vein, understanding the motivation of my students acts as another critical point. As a teacher, I must be cognizant of the underlying drive of each student. Meeting the students at their language level and creating a warm, inviting classroom experience will insure success for my students' English language development.
