This unit mainly discussed about the advantages and disadvantages of the course books and lesson materials. It explained the two groups of lesson materials; the authentic materials and created materials. I come up with the conclusion that using the authentic materials can bring the right kind of motivation and challenge to the class and it is better to use it for the intermediate students because they already have a good grasp of the English language. I’m sure that they will appreciate the fact that they are not only learning the language but they are also being exposed to the cultural content of the material as well. With regards to the course book, teachers should remember that the use of the course book as a guide only and it’s not solution to everything. Teachers should also omit sections/topics from the book that are unsuitable to the level of the students being taught, he/she must supplement the book with the other materials, authentic and/or created, to provide an opportunity for extended language practice.
