This unit explained the four present tenses and explored their form and usage. The four tenses are present simple, present perfect, present continuous, and present perfect continuous. For each tense a list of mistakes students commonly make was provided along with encouragement to brainstorm on ways to correct the mistake. Ideas on how to teach these four present tenses during the Activate stage were also provided. This unit made my head swim a bit, but the examples for each tense were thorough and the consistent formatting order of form, usage, typical student errors, and activate stage teaching ideas helped me to form a mental map that really helped to compare and contrast the four tenses. I especially enjoyed the teaching idea of having two photos, one with an action and one with a result to teach the difference between the present perfect tense and the present perfect continuous tense. For example, using a picture of an onion and a picture of crying to create the sentences “you’ve been chopping onions” and “you’re crying.” Great unit!
