There are many methods of teaching English to learners in all stages of cognitive development. Grammar translation involves the direct equivalents of words, audio lingualism is learning through behavior or repetition, task-based or learning through activity, the silent way where students discover language for themselves, and the lexical approach where words & phrases are used as building blocks for language acquisition, among others. There is no one right or wrong method to use, but a good teacher will use a variety of all of them. Jeremy harmer produced the ESA method or Engage-Study-Activate method, which includes all of the positives and can work for all age and proficiency groups. Engage is to get the students thinking and talking with games, music, pictures, etc. Study works on verb tenses, practicing sounds, and the construction of the language. Activate uses the above in realistic context: story writing, debates, etc.
