The first unit of this course has focused the attention on teachers and students, listing the main characteristics that usually defines respectively a “good” teacher and a “good” learner as well as the roles that a teacher can employ during the lesson. Furthermore, the learners have been divided into different groups according to their age in order to identify a wide range of factors to take into consideration while teaching like their different attitudes towards the new language, their attention span, the exposure they previously had to the language, their language level and learning experience as well as the motivation they possess to learn a new language.
This unit has been fundamental to understand how a teacher should be able to be flexible and, according to the characteristics of the learners, assess a lesson plan including the proper activities and materials that can build or maintain their motivation.
