This unit has demonstrated past tenses & their forms & usages :
Past simple- Past simple is used to talk about completed actions in past .It can be used with or without adverb of time.
It shows the actions completed long ago or just a while ago. It also tells us about the order in which actions took place in past.
Example: She cleaned her room before I woke up.
The ancients believed in nature.
Structure:
Positive - subject +verb in past tense+rest of the sentence
Negative- subject+didn't +base form of the verb + rest of the sentence
e.g. He didn't steal the car
Past Perfect -It is used to describe completed action that happened before another action in the past.
Structure:
Positive-subject +had+past participle +rest of the sentence
e.g.She had eaten the mangoes by the time I reached
Negative-subject +had+not+past participle +rest of the sentence
e.g.They had not seen my house before yesterday.
Past continuous- It is used to indicate uncompleted action of past also known as past progressive tense.
Structure:
Positive-subject +aux.verb(was/were)+present participle of main verb+rest of the sentence
e.g. She was writing a letter.
They were eating at the restaurant.
Negative-subject +aux.verb(was/were)+not+present participle of main verb+ rest of the sentence
e.g. You were not driving carefully.
She was not doing her homework.
Past perfect continuous- It is used to indicate an action that started in the past & continued for some time .
It gives a time reference to show when did action started & how long it continued.
Structure:
Positive-subject +aux.verb(had+been)+present participle+rest of the sentence
e.g. She had been waiting for you since morning.
Negative- subject +had+not+been+present participle + rest of the sentence
e.g. They had not been working for two years.
