This unit was an overview about theories, methods and techniques used in teaching English. It began with a survey of older theories and moved to the more modern theories. This course, we are told, only uses the ESA (engage-study-activate) technique which is a potpourri of the best aspects of older techniques. The chapter goes on to describe this technique in detail and also goes over a list of activities that can be used for each part of this technique. I appreciate this as it is very practical and handy and helps me envision the classroom in a concrete manner versus the more abstract. There is also a section about feedback that encompasses correction techniques and describes which are best and under what circumstances. There is also a code given that can be used when correcting student writing. Finally, the appendix on lesson planning in general helps see all this information in a concise and neat manner while highlighting some do's and do not's. I found this chapter engaging but also a bit difficult as it contradicted some things I learned in another EFL course. I like the choice of technique used here [ESA] as it is more flexible and malleable than the technique I was taught previously [mostly PPP]. All in all, a very well executed and explained chapter.
