Pavilion, Michigan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Unit 11 was about the receptive skills: listening and reading. The unit talked about motives for reading and listening [namely, purpose and entertainment] first. Then the specialist skills employed when reading and listening were dissected: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed info, and deduction from context. Then we were introduced to problems in the receptive skill area: namely language, topic and task. Solutions to the problems were given: pre-teach vocabulary, careful selection of text to be used, create interest in topic, and how to promote task comprehension. Penultimately, were given an example of a lesson plan that revolved around the life of Elvis Presley. Finally, keys to a successful receptive lesson were outlined. I learned a lot from this unit especially how non-authentic texts are used for language learners. The term, however, is a pity as it implies that one is learning something fake and useless and possibly disingenuous. Possibly a term like "controlled texts" or even "learner-centered texts" would make this concept more palatable to the teacher using it and the student receiving it, rather than the sterile and stilted notion that comes to mind when invoking petri-dish learning? Thank you for this material. Very much appreciated. Amen.
