Unit 1 consisted of the importance in both role and relationship of teachers and learners. A 'good teacher' should be fair, have an extensive knowledge of the subject, and should motivate the learner. A 'good learner' should have a willingness to listen to the language, ability to think about their own learning process, acceptance of error correction, and have a desire to learn. To be an ESL teacher is to take on a multi-faceted profession, encompassing roles from organizer, tutor, model, monitor, manager, and others. Learners are divided into two categories, adult (18+) and young learner (2-18), with young learner then being divided into sub-categories by age: 2-7, 8-13, 14-18 years.
