This unit gave a very brief overview of classroom dynamics and some suggestions on how to run a class and keep it focused. I have worked at a Japanese public middle school where my abilities to implement many of these strategies is limited. Ordered rows and far too much teacher talking time are the norm, but hopefully with the tools listed here I will be able to slowly adjust that. Certainly in my future career teaching in a private school I hope I will be afforded the opportunity to implement a horseshoe seating arrangement and work with smaller groups. In public schools I have dealt with some of the worst forms of discipline imaginable and I found many of the strategies given ineffective, but I am not sure if a viable strategy even exists as many of the Japanese teachers I work with who have decades of experience are equally frustrated and impotent to exert control over the classroom.
