In this unit, I learnt what qualities define a good teacher and a good student. Apart from being a kind and patient person who loves teaching and who can motivate students by being lively and entertaining in the classroom, it is also important that a good teacher should have good bonding with the students. He/She should be fair to students, highlighting their mistakes sensibly, so that they don't lose their confidence or motivation. While dealing with the students in class, a teacher will sometimes be controlling the class, while other times he/she may be just facilitating some acitivity. Sometimes, the teacher will also become a participant alongwith the students and sometimes will be playing the role as an assessor while evaluating students' performance. A good teacher should know how to keep the students motivated and how to make the class enjoyable by taking these different roles at different times. When we talk about the ESL students, they can be of any age from young learners to adults. They may have different reasons behind joining the English learning class be it the willingness to learn a new language, or career advancement. Someone might want to move/travel to an English country, while someone might want to achieve success in exams. A student will be able to the absorb the best from the class if he/she is willing to listen to the language, willing to experiment with the language, willing to learn and ask questions. At the same time, he/she should be willing to openly accept his/her mistakes especially in case of adult learners. Young learners especially very little kids are generally open to learning things or languages as they don't have fixed viewpoint while adults may have their respective life experiences which often affect their learning experience in ESL classes. While young learners will be able to grasp a new language with musical poems, songs or animated stories but on the other hand, a different level of motivation may be required while dealing adults learners, for example talking about their life experiences. Teaching teenagers group could be a challenging task also because at the age of 14-15 for example, students are not willing to take risks as they are very conscious about their image at this age, and they are not willing to experiment with the language. So, from a wide variety of young learners to adults, we can classify the ESL learners on the basis of their English language abilities such as Beginners, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. One the same lines, Common European Framework has 6 categories for English language learners on the basis of their English language abilities such as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. A good teacher has to keep in mind the level of their students' English ability and thus adapt the activities accordingly. Similarly, a good student will try to absorb the language by listening to the teacher, by actively partcipating in the class, by not being afraid from asking the questions, and by being open to the criticism or learning the mistakes.
