Unit 8 talked about the future tenses, of which there are many. The varying uses of the future simple and the “be going to” appear extremely difficult to keep track of, but at least the other future tenses are straight forward enough. Teaching the simple present and simple continuous as future tenses seems like it may be quite challenging, I can foresee students switching to using these because they will have grown accustomed to them at times when the tenses don’t make sense. As someone who has worked in Japan, the future tense has always been quite challenging to teach for the simple fact that the Japanese language does not have a future tense. The closest translation is a verb structure that in English is better fitting to “I have decided to…”. Explaining the nuance of these future tenses feels like a monumental task, that hopefully having studied this I will be a little more equipped to handle.
