This unit was very helpful. I can't imagine how much my teachers must have thought about how to handle disciplinary issues and motivational problems in while I was in high school. This unit made me have a newfound respect for teachers as a whole.
The starting topics of the unit were about how to use one's voice and physical presence in the classroom. Some of this was interesting, but I saw it as more of a review of some previous unit material. Many of these actions of the teacher's such as gesturing and using eye contact would undoubtedly be used in some of the activity ideas explained before.
I found the part about seating and grouping very intriguing. I learned that each is used for different degrees of a relaxed classroom setting, or an atmosphere in which the teacher is in main focus and therefore in more control of the class. This unit made me think of the classroom more "scientifically." Sometimes a lesson will natural need to be more lecture based. Say it has more material and irregular conjugations for a few points of view. This lesson would need to be taught in a classroom with classic row seating arranged, and pairs would be a good option to group. This way the teacher could walk around and monitor as students practice.
This unit also helped me to know what to focus on when giving directions. Simplicity is key, as well as consistency. Gestures, miming, real objects, and pictures are also useful to decrease teacher talk time. Remember to ask students to repeat directions as well.
Unit 5 worked in teaching me to think of the dynamic of the classroom in different ways and how to customize it to each role the teacher must play.
