Having been a teacher, language arts was always a struggle to teach because there are always exceptions to the rules and for some like nouns and verbs for example, different types. I feel that talking out sentences will help as suggested here with the examples of patterns, or rules like adding ed or ing or est. Being able to say that it follows that word or what is the object that follows it will help to decipher what is being said in the sentence. Starting with the basics of nouns and verbs will help since that is a basic sentence part of subject and predicate. A student can then add from there what is needed to complete a sentence for it to make sense.
