As with the present tenses, the past tense has four divisions which categorise it grammatically. Again, it is interesting (even alarming for a foreign language speaker) to realise how irregular many verbs become in the past tense; in some cases almost completely different words which would, one presumes, add levels of complexity in mastering this component of language learning. Knowing which usage goes with which tense also confuses the issue somewhat: it is instinctive for a native speaker, but much more disarming to someone who does not know the vagaries of English grammatical rules.
