Mulliken, Michigan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit on methodology, Theories, methods teaching techniques is packed with a lot of information. The unit begins with the "best" methodologies, there are seven total different methods of teaching TEFOL. They all have their strengths and the section ends with encouraging the teacher to use a variety of methods; depending on the student's language proficiency level. The unit discusses ESA - Engage, Study and Activate, the cornerstone (according to this program) for teaching TEFOL students. It details the three stages, clearly and the benefits of each. The unit emphasizes the teacher should start with Engaging and finish with Activate. It also gives advice as to how much the teacher should speak, each of these stages, the teacher can control how much she talks. This is good as the purpose of TEFOL teaching is to get student to use the language.
There is a lengthy description of examples of how to engage students and a brief description of each example. All teachers should find these very helpful as they add to the variety of teaching - preventing lessons from becoming too predictable and 'boring'. There are 10 suggestions
The three core ESA techniques: Straight-Arrow; Boomerang and Patchwork are described in detail; along with how each ESA stage is incorporated. The twenty ideas to engage students is good and gives teachers new to TESOL teaching many ideas that can be used/modified and incorporated in teaching. I found them too laborious and wish there were more examples; or that some of them were included in another section; as this section was too lengthy - a lot of information to digest.
