Unit 1 is about the characteristics of teachers and learners. Good teachers have several characteristics in common such as being fair, being able to motivate students, and having a good knowledge of the subject matter. Good learners also share certain characteristics including a willingness and desire to learn, a willingness to experiment with the language, and the ability to reflect on their progress. It is necessary that learners be divided into learning levels so that they can be taught at a level that will help them progress in their language skills. Although the levels may be called different names depending on the school or curriculum, the basic six levels are beginner, elementary, low, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. Students may be motivated to learn to further their careers, for travel, to communicate with other English speakers, or perhaps to live in an English speaking country.
