In this unit, I learned about managing a classroom. I surveyed general guidelines regarding eye contact, gesture, and voice. Grouping methods were discussed including working with the class as a whole, individually, in pairs, or in groups. Classroom layout or arrangement was also discussed and I could imagine how I would arrange the tables and chairs in my classroom depending on the age, nationality, personality, and motivation of my students.
Techniques for giving instructions and writing on the board were discussed, including the important principle of reducing back-to-the-class time and giving individual attention. Student Talk Time vs. Teacher Talk Time, establishing rapport with the students, and establishing and maintaining a level of discipline were all outlined in this rather comprehensive overview.
