English tense content is a topic that can cause a lot of misunderstanding among English learners. Most of English grammar books represent twelve tenses that may seem complicated at the first stage of learning English.
In fact, there are three tenses: simple, past and future. When I was learning tenses I drew an analogy between three tenses and three -layer cake and it helped me to understand the tenses system. I discovered that there are three time periods and four type of actions: Simple, Continuous, Perfect and Perfect Continuous. Structure of Past tenses is similar to present tenses, except that pas tense relate to past time periods. All continuous forms include " to be" plus "ing" ending. All Perfect forms feature verb "to have" and the past participle form of the verb. Perfect continuous forms feature some form of the verb "to have" plus "been", plus the "ing" form of the verb.
