This unit covered the difference between authentic material (real world items that are repurposed by an ESA teacher to teach English), and created materials (stuff I make myself that targets the students solely). I benefited from the pages of sample materials to use for role-playing especially. I’m not a playwright by any means, but seeing examples of role-playing materials really helps. I also benefited from the examination of course books and their pros and cons and how to use them to best effect. I think the best reason to have a course book is that the materials have been tested already and shown to be effective. I’m not experienced at teaching people English, though I have taught other subjects, so having something solid to start with feels right. On the other hand, I’m very creative and I like the idea of creating my own materials. This unit benefited me because I can see the way to combine authentic, and created materials, and course books and my own works into, what I hope to be, a pleasing style for my students. I will refer to this unit many times as it will be a work in progress.
