This unit describes the types of teachers and learners that one can encounter in the classroom. It gives examples of what good teachers and learners are like and what motivates them. The unit describes the different roles a teacher may take within the classroom and examples of how to effectively carry out each role and what kinds of problems to watch out for. The unit also described the different levels of language ability for learners and the main differences between adult and young learners. I think that most of this information is common sense but it was important to learn examples of what kinds of roles teachers have to take sometimes and examples of how those roles can be taken successfully as well as what common mistakes to avoid within those roles. For example, the tendency for some teachers to spoon-feed students is always present but teachers have to take their role as a Resource or Facilitator and hold back in order to let students work through their questions alone before coming to the teacher when they've exhausted their knowledge. It was also interesting to note the one example they gave about the differences between learners from Asian countries versus learners from Latin American countries. Asian leaners are commonly thought to be more serious about their learning experience and respectful to their teachers but lack creativity and willingness to speak out and participate whereas learners from Latin American countries tend to be the opposite. I think these kinds of differences would be important for a TEFL teacher to research ahead of time before beginning their teaching experience so they are aware of the learning styles they will encounter in order to be able to work through those learning styles in a way that doesn't make the student more intimidated but more motivated to learn instead.
