Markey, Michigan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit was a briefing on the parts of speech in the English language. The unit start out with nouns, categorizing them into simple, proper, compound, abstract, and collective. It also talked about plural nouns and what to do when words end in "ch," "sh," "x," "s," "y," and "f." The noun part was wrapped up by talking about countable nouns, such as "car," and uncountable nouns, such as "water."
Adjectives were next, as well as the use of them as comparatives and superlatives; superlatives being the extreme of the adjective and usually taking on an "est" ending. I learned that a basic rule to follow when listing multiple adjectives is to go by size, age, color, and then material.
The article section helped to reinforce in my mind that "the" is definite and used for something specific out of a group, whereas "a" and "an" are used to talk about something in general from a group. Using "an" in front of words that start with vowels but sound like consonants was also a good refresher.
Verbs were interesting in this unit because I remember struggling in Spanish classes with infinitives and irregular conjugations. Now I understand why English must be hard to learn. There seem to be just as much, if not many more, irregular verbs and verb forms.
Gerunds, pronouns, and conjunctions were simple, but it was good to have a review of adverbs and prepositions. Aside from adverbs that end with "ly," I sometimes confused these two and/or got confused by the placements rules.
Overall, this unit was a good review of English grammar, and made me think about some rules and irregularities that I hadn't deeply thought about in a while. It was interesting to view this unit from a zero knowledge perspective, and in turn place myself in the shoes of a student. Along with the review, I learned that I may need to simplify my future lessons more so than I previously anticipated.
