In this unit, I have reviewed the cultural issues to keep in mind when teaching in a foreign country, the different means of finding employment in a foreign country, how to properly format a C.V./ resume, and the associations and organizations that may help teachers find resources related to English teaching jobs. Before beginning work teaching English in a foreign country, it is important to thoroughly research the culture, including expectations for appropriate dress, gestures, language, and behaviors, as much as possible. Understanding the basic history of the country and culture, the religious and political affiliations of the region, the country's predominant attitudes towards foreigners, and the basics of the country's cultural heritage are all extremely useful. Finding employment can be accomplished through a variety of means including advertising (via various websites and newspapers with TEFL related sections) and through application to recruitment organizations. Applications to recruitment and dispatch companies can be done from within the target country or abroad, although some organizations may require the individual to already be living within the country before applying for a job. Every resume/C.V. should reasonably include the applicant's full name, birth date, phone number, email address, nationality, address of residence, marital status, prior teaching experience, and qualifications. The specific formatting of a resume/C.V. can vary, but conciseness, relevance of information, and ease of reading should be kept in mind during the design process. There are many different TEFL/TESOL-related organizations that teachers can apply to be a member of/become affiliated with. There may be a monetary cost associated with membership, but the information and support that these organizations offer may be beneficial enough to justify individual teachers paying the price of membership.
