Unit 13 discusses how to teach proper pronunciation to students. I did not know how involved the process was until I studied this lesson. The unit breaks the process down by intonation, stress, and a little on rhythm. I appreciated the discussion on intonation verses stress and how the important ideas needing to be conveyed are the primary stressed points in a sentence. I found the example of 6 different ways to emphasize words in the sentence “He didn’t mean to kick the dog” to be very beneficial. I think it really illustrates how English sentences should be emphasized according to context. The rules on how sentences rise and fall was also useful as it put a hazy idea into clear, graspable concepts. The table that explained how to stress certain kinds of words is also helpful. The phonetic script is a little tough for me, but I’m starting to get the hang of it. I was surprised at the intricate breakdown of the speech organs and how we use them to create our various sounds of speech. I think these resources will help me address problem areas for students. I also benefited from the timing of when teachers decide to introduce pronunciation into their class lessons. I’ll have to experiment a bit to find the right style for myself.
