As I mentioned before, I am a former literacy interventionist and I feel very passionately about how receptive and productive skills are taught. I agree with the statement that many teachers feel that writing is not good use of classroom time, but it is critical! Writing is something that can be integrated across any curriculum or subject matter. I think that students need both guided writing (sitting with a teacher in a small group) and time to write freely on their own. Also, I agree that handwriting/penmanship is important. There is a reciprocity between handwriting and print in books. Students who cannot write English letters properly are often at a disadvantage for being able to read it in texts. Again, the contents of this unit are important and meaningful.
