Brief overview: this unit encompasses the basics about Teachers and Learners. It enumerates the conditions it takes to be a good teacher; the roles of a teacher; the qualities of a good learner; categories of learners with respect to age; differences between adult and young learners; levels of language ability and what constitutes each level; reasons for student motivation to study english. I learned that good subject knowledge is a pre-requisite for the teacher. I concur with this statement in that having a good example of the language [teacher/model], as a student, is fundamental to proper learning. Also, the text emphasizes that the teacher should be kind and patient. I totally agree with this. This, I believe, is especially important when garnering teaching towards young learners because of inhibitions involved with second language acquisition. If a teacher is mean and rushed and only concerned with getting through a load of material, then the learner will feel nervous and almost superfluous which will make it difficult to open up and be receptive to a strange new experience/language. I cannot stress enough how great I think it is that this course emphasizes this aspect of the teacher: recently, I took another course in TEFL [that I flunked] where the emphasis was on utility, adherence to strict format and firmness/strictness/pure robotic professionalism of the teacher.
