Then we get past continous that we use for actions that have been going on around a certain point in the past. Here the action that has been going on for a while might even continue after the marked time in the past. Then we habe the past perfect continous which is used for actions that have also been going on for a while up till a certain point in the past. We have no clues about the continuing of the activity.
