This unit was a brief introduction to teaching English as a foreign language. Many topics were covered, including the characteristics of good teachers, the characteristics of good learners, the different roles a teacher will take during a lesson, differences between young learners and adult learners, and the differentiation between English levels (i.e. what constitutes beginner, intermediate, and advanced English learners). My primary takeaway from this lesson was that teachers need to fulfill a variety of roles in the classroom. Teachers need to be able to read the class, and determine the best course of action to in order to facilitate a good learning environment, whether that be by helping students answer a question, prompting students to work through problems on their own, or switching students to a new activity.
