Splitting up the past tense into its four different aspects, simple, perfect, continuous, and perfect continuous, makes it easier for students to understand that there are rules. And learning the explicit rules for myself makes me a better, more knowledgeable teacher. My impression of the past tense is that 'have,' 'be,' and 'did' will make the most trouble for students, since these auxiliary verbs don't focus on the action. However, I think that they make more sense when used within the formulas we learned in this unit. I'm going to keep that in mind for when I teach this material.
