Unit 15 explained how to measure the progress that students have made in their English studies. It can be done in many ways, not only through external tests. In fact, students often take placement tests to determine what level of English class they will start at. After this preliminary test, teachers can also give periodic tests, such as progress/diagnostic tests, to discover the amount of material that students have learned and retained. Perhaps the most important tests that teachers can give, however, are practice tests, as these can prepare students for external examinations that are very content heavy. These can aid students and teachers by identifying the topics they need to study more.
The latter part of this unit listed many different external examinations, and what they tests students on (not to mention the reasons that students need to take them).
