When encountering a class, it may be an existing class or a new class. One of the first things you should do on your first day whether it is a new class or an existing class is to develop rapport. You should develop rapport between yourself and the students to have the students comfortable with you as the teacher and also if it is a new class, they should developed rapport between themselves so they can feel comfortable to participate in group activities. Having a safe and comfortable environment for students to express themselves will allow them better opportunities to practice their English. This unit provides some activities such as warmers/icebreakers to start the class and develop rapport. It also address common problems such as large classes, varying levels of English, and using their native language in class. It also offers some solutions to these problems, however there are no best solutions, the teacher may encounter unique situations and should be flexible and creative during those times.
