This unit covered a number of sections on evaluations, including some examples of practice tests. In Japan, testing is very large part of English education. Students take the EIKEN here, a standardized test with 5 levels. From the third level and higher the test includes interviews, and I have often practiced with my students for these tests. Unfortunately, this test is optional and most of my students don’t take it – thus not getting the time to work on interview skills that are so desperately needed in Japanese education. I also find the school’s standardized tests desperately lacking, especially in light of this unit’s guidelines to keep tests measuring ability rather than memorization. Often the tests I am forced to give to my students are identical to practice guides given a week before. When I asked to divert from the materials of the course book – I was shot down by my superiors as being unfair. Hopefully I will eventually work in a place that allows me to make my own exams.
