This unit was a very broad introduction to pronunciation and speech patterns, something I have often felt totally unequipped to teach. The uses of tone – rising and falling is one that I have never been able to pin down in my own speech. This unit has caused me to pay a little more attention to the way I speak and will hopefully allow me to teach students more than “rise when you get to the end of the question.” Similarly, working on stress looks like it will be difficult to teach because of the number of rules and exceptions, but I feel like this unit has given me at least some of the tools I need. As for pronunciation, I have often found this extremely difficult because Japanese has only five distinct vowel sounds that roughly line up with the five vowel letters in English. While English has many more sounds represented in these five vowels, my students often cannot work out how to pronounce an English word except in the way it would be said in Japanese – a way that is often almost unrecognizable to native English speakers. I can definitely tell that I have my work cut out for me.
