In this unit we have studied the many different skills that are required to become a successful ESL teacher. We have also covered the diverse range of roles you must take on when teaching a class, and the ability to understand which role is required, and when.
I believe that an ESL teacher's most important attributes are an extensive understanding of the subject matter, and the ability to quickly build strong rapport with students.
If you do not have a strong understanding of the subject that you teach - this will negatively affect a student's ability to learn. Additionally, building strong, trusting, and respectful relationships with students is essential in allowing them to feel comfortable and motivated to participate throughout the class.
My main takeaways from this unit are that age, culture, and life experience, as well as differing levels of education and comprehension, can dramatically affect the way a student learns. I also learned that each student may process information more effectively in different formats, and at different paces. This knowledge has given me an insight into the importance of the teacher/learner relationship.
