Has re-iterated the importance of teaching to students abilities. There are 4 things that students need to do with new language, be exposed to language (importance of student talk time), understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practise and produce. When selecting vocabulary we must select what is appropriate to the student, appropriate to the task, consider the frequency and coverage of the vocabulary and the teachability of the vocabulary. Students need to know the meaning, the usage, word grammar, the interaction of the vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. With grammatical language structure we need to teach the meaning, usage, forms and patterns and the differences between spoken and written forms. The unit also reiterated the importance of having varied lesson plans to keep the lessons interesting. Using, but not exclusive to, the ESA plans of 'Straight Arrow', 'Boomerang' and 'Patchwork' lesson plans.
