As a former secondary English teacher, I continue to be interested in educational theories. Understanding and implementing the most effective teaching strategies and techniques has been a focus in my academic career. Therefore, comparing and contrasting the differing TESL theories presented in this chapter was highly informative. I appreciated the way the chapter and accompanying video provided a variety of theories throughout history, before introducing the prescribed theory for our course, ESA. By outlining the historical context of each of the theories, I felt renewed confidence in the research-based structure of your program. I found the laundry list of activities (word finds, role-playing, hangman, etc.) provided for each stage of ESA to be extremely helpful. I plan on utilizing many, if not all, of the listed activities in my own classroom in the future. I believe I will be referring back to Unit 3 throughout my TESL career.
