In this unit, I learned about the importance and principles of lesson planning. It could be a time consuming process for some teachers, and it could be a guide to successful and effective lesson delivery in the class for some. Although too much planning may make the lessons very rigid, but this is the point where we as ESL teachers need flexibility as to when and to what extent should the lesson plan be followed. There are a number of benefits to preparing a lesson plan. For example, if teacher is not sure of some grammatical rules or pronunciation of new vocabulary; the process of lesson planning may give him/her ample time to prepare for the class beforehand. While making a lesson plan, we should try to keep it as flexible as possible, so that it can be adapted according to the students' level/needs. It is important that a lesson plan includes learner objectives, personal aims, language point to be taught, which teaching aids will be used, anticipated problems for students as well as the teacher. Experience teachers may just write a few brief notes instead of the details mentioned above, but lesson planning helps inexperienced teachers to stay in right direction during the lesson delivery. Planning a sequence of lessons is also important and more or less the same as lesson planning. We should make sure that all skills are included in the lesson plan by incorporating a wide variety of different activities. Again, flexibility will often be required during the lessons, and sometimes it may result in re-sequencing our lessons.
