This unit gives teachers the decision making patterns necessary to choose vocabulary words and grammar appropriate to the students. The unit then concludes with methods of implementing the function teaching of the chosen vocabulary and grammar. I found this unit to be just what I needed to whittle down the myriad possibilities of what to present. The ESA organized examples throughout were enough to help me grasp all the more how the engage, study, and activate stages would look. The idea lists on pages 2 and 3 gave me basic ideas that hold endless possibilities. For example, simply putting “Contrast”, under the engage stage, gives me a basic heading under which I can invent a number of ways to show contrasts to engage the students, even combining pictures and realia to create contrasts. These basic lists are just what I need to jumpstart my own creativity. Another aspect of these lists that I found invaluable is that they help me see what is appropriate for each stage and which is not. Even the test questions on this test further drive home the necessary division of activities to keep the teaching methods effective. I also benefited from the task sheets where I could put into practice what I will eventually need to do on a regular basis. It helps me to feel more comfortable with the ESA method.
